That really is the eReader purchase question.
I know in the past I’ve said, “Wait!” But perhaps I need to rethink my position. Should we be holding out for better eReaders? Should we wait until dual colour screens are available? I know there’s better selection coming, but is waiting really worth it?
What’s got me reconsidering an eReader purchase is this article: “Your new eBook reader will soon be obsolete, but you should buy it anyway” written by Martin Hoscik of eBook magazine.
The title pretty much sums up the author’s perspective on this matter, and Hoscik does list all the reasons why you might consider putting off that purchase of an eBook reader. Still, he concludes that there’s really no reason to wait if you are simply looking for a device for reading books on the go.
If you’re just looking to read standard books on the move you’re unlikely to need any of the fancier features coming out next year and, though cheaper devices are sure to be available before long, the build quality of budget devices is unlikely to be too impressive – just see how quickly shiny metal cases are replaced by thin, cheap plastic as manufacturers fight to bring costs down.
Technology changes in the blink of an eye. Whether you buy now or wait until later, whatever device you buy becomes nearly instantly obsolete at first use. Such is the nature of the tech beast.
And so, I’ve reconsidered my views on purchasing an eReader. While I won’t be taking the leap before Christmas, I will be in the market by early next year. Any suggestions?
UPDATE: I think I’ll hold out for the Nook! Read: Why the Nook is Worth Waiting For.
